ImageTentative Agreement Ratified by Membership

The membership of the United Faculty of Western Washington has overwhelmingly approved the tentative agreement that the UFWW bargaining team reached with the University's administration.

The Board of Trustees will meet on Friday, October 9 to ratify the agreement. At that point, the updated sections will become part of the current contract, which runs through 2011.

Once the tentative agreement has been ratified by both sides the tenure line faculty will receive their 2009-2010 appointment letters. Any raises triggered by this agreement will appear in the second paycheck of the academic year but will be retroactive to September 16, 2009.

ImageNEW CONTRACT RESPECTS COLLEGE CULTURE, OFFERS A SOLID FOUNDATION

Nearly seven years ago, the Washington Legislature passed a bill that gave faculty at four-year colleges the right to bargain collectively. That bill, which passed with strong support from WEA and AFT Washington, is paying dividends for faculty at The Evergreen State College. Their newly negotiated collective bargaining agreement is a solid first contract, and it builds on the college’s existing culture. (see contract pdf).

During negotiations, bargainers for the United Faculty of Evergreen focused on three themes: tradition, equity and fair compensation. The three-year agreement improves job security for adjunct faculty, expands employee leave and offers an immediate 10.5 percent salary increase, plus bonuses and additional raises in the second and third years. The contract also includes grievance procedures, third-party arbitration and just-cause language.

The Evergreen Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on the agreement Nov. 12.

“We look forward to developing a mature and successful labor-management relationship with Evergreen administrators and trustees,” said Laurie Meeker, chair of UFE and a member of the union bargaining team.

UFE is the newest of four faculty unions affiliated with the United Faculty of Washington State. Faculty unions at Central, Eastern and Western Washington universities negotiated collective bargaining agreements earlier.

The four faculty unions represent 2,100 faculty members who teach more than 30,000 students. UFWS is affiliated with the Washington Education Association, National Education, AFT Washington and AFT.

Good News!

The United Faculty of Western Washington and the University administration have reached a tentative agreement on the two sections of our contract that were re-opened this past June. We were required to open the contract this year to bargain for compensation, and the UFWW choose to renegotiate in order to improve the Non-Tenure Track section of the contract as well. Our full contract runs until September 15, 2011.

On behalf of the Executive Board of UFWW, I would like to thank both bargaining teams for their hard work. In the midst of the most difficult economic conditions of recent memory, this agreement helps to ensure Western’s stability. We have strengthened the core of the University by guaranteeing that long-term faculty, including tenured and non-tenure track faculty, will be rewarded for their success and their commitment to the University’s mission.
