RE: Overload compensation

Overload compensation appears to be a misunderstood issue. As Art. 14.7 states, "overload will be compensated at the appropriate Lecturer rate per workload unit." However, the rates per workload unit listed in Art. 14.2.4 are minimum rates. Therefore, those rates are the least amount of compensation a faculty member should expect for overload pay. There is no maximum compensation stated.

We expect faculty to negotiate an overload rate that they find acceptable for the work involved. For example - - and only as illustration - - a full professor with 15 years of experience at CWU making $55,000 for nine-months is making $1,222.22 per workload unit (WLU). That faculty member would be perfectly within rights and common sense to request overload compensation at that same rate. A common industry standard for overtime compensation is that it is 1.5 times the regular rate, which in this case equals $1,833.33 per WLU.

Should the faculty member not be able to reach an acceptable compensation rate during negotiations with CWU administration, then the faculty member can rightfully refuse the overload work. CWU administration has the right to make a strategic decision not to have the work completed.

In summary, the overload compensation rates listed in Art. 14.2.4 are minimum rates. There is no maximum designated in the CBA.
