Tenure Recognition Reception

28 September, 2007: Congratulations to faculty that were promoted/tenured! Jointly hosted by the Faculty Senate and UFC.

Last year, we held our third Tenure Recognition Reception on Sept. 22, 2006. We had around 40 attendees throughout the evening, good visiting, beautiful music from a string trio, and food and beverages to help us celebrate those newly tenured faculty. This year, UFC and the Faculty Senate have decided to hold this event on the second Friday of fall quarter, rather than the first, to give us more time to promote it to faculty, and the faculty more time to settle in to the new year.

Workload Planning Process

The Workload planning process memorandum responds to the most frequent issues regarding the workload planning process (dated January 16, 2007).

The implementation of the workload plan has not gone as we'd imagined it would when we discussed the matter in negotiations. We're hopeful that we can help the process improve this fall and early winter. We'll be holding training sessions with stewards and department chairs this fall, to help the process more appropriately match the way the process was discussed at the bargaining table. Questions or comments? Please contact your steward or a union officer.

The Overload compensation memorandum explains the union's position on overload compensation (dated January 16, 2007).

UFC and the administration have clarified how to handle bank hours under the new contract language. Read the banked hours announcement for details (dated Aug. 9, 2006).

Grievance 06-01

The first grievance happened to be one that affected librarians. We've now reached a settlement on the matter with administration prior to going to arbitration, which had been scheduled for Oct. 16, 2006. The actual text of the settlement will be available in the UFC Office (Hertz 226) after it has been signed-off on. Read the Library Grievance Announcement for details.

Post-Tenure Evaluation

We've heard from a number of faculty that administration is indicating that a faculty member can be terminated as a result of the post-tenure evaluation process. This is incorrect. Art. 20.7.4 c clearly states that a disciplinary process meeting just cause standards must also be occurring.
